How it works.
This is a sub only tournament.
Bracketing:
The tournament is pre-registration only. When you sign up you let us know some essential information about yourself.
(Which division you would like to compete in, belt level / years of experience, weight, age, school).
All competitors will be grouped into pools of 5. Groupings will attempt to make the most even/fair brackets based on weight, skill, age, etc. This is of course limited by how many people enter on a given Sunday; if there are fewer competitors, it is likely brackets with the same rule sets will merge (No Gi beginner and intermediate combine, in GI white combines with blue, purple combines with brown). We believe that having a weight and skill range that is a bit broader in order to get more matches is better, even if for a few you are outclasses or undersized.
The tournament is round robin; in a pool of 5, each competitor is guaranteed four matches.
Secondary consideration for shifting of athletes within brackets is given to belt, school, and Portland Sunday Open ranking.
- Our aim is to get you 4 good matches. sometimes the weight spread will be wider that an IBJJf brackets or an arbitrary 10 lb spread, sometimes the skill spread will span belts.
- Where possible teammates will not be bracketed together.
- Those last odd 1,2 3, or 4 people who do not make a full bracket of 5 will either make a few brackets of 6, or together form a bracket of 4 depending upon what makes better pools across all pools for the day.
- If you are so much of an outlier of weight or skill that it just doesn’t make sense to group within the available pools, you will be contacted prior to the event and moneys refunded.
- If you are a black belt, please contact us before registering. We will do out best to arrange a super fight or place you in a special bracket.
Scoring:
Win by submission: 1 pt
Draw: 0 pts
Lose by Submission: -1 pt
In the event of a tie, a winner is chosen by 1. The result of the match between the tie competitors, 2. If that was a draw, then the winner is the individual with the fastest overall submission times.
Evolve:
Jiu Jitsu is fun. We’re trying to make this tournament the best experience possible for people by eliminating weight cutting, making sure people have lots of matches, and keeping the rules as pure and simple as possible. We are open to taking feedback and the rules of the tournament evolving over time to best serve the Portland grappling community. Please send all feedback and suggestions to portlandsundayopen@gmail.com

-
NO INFECTIOUS DISEASES. No competitors will be allowed to register or compete if they have active cold sores, ringworm, staph or viral infections, etc.
